Travelling
by Car
Children will have a Hip
Spica fitted at different ages. At each age the principle remains
the same i.e. we want the seat to give as much protection to the
child as is possible. It goes without saying, the younger the child
the more vulnerable they are.
Hospitals have a policy
of trying to ensure each child leaving it, leaves using a suitable
restraint i.e. a child car seat. This is the law!
The fitting of Hip Spica
makes using a standard child’s car seat almost impossible;
the sides of the seats are too high to accommodate the form of the
caste or ring splint.
As a general principle,
we recommend that children with a Hip Spica’s should always
travel in a child’s car seat rearward facing. Why? Well if
you are involved in an accident the seat itself will absorb a large
proportion of the force involved on impact. The forces are spread
over the body and the seat. Remember the plaster cast might be a
similar weight to your child. If you were to be involved in an accident
seated forward facing, your child’s weight, together with
the additional weight of the cast, will concentrate additional pressure
on the points (harness) holding your child in the seat. That is
a great deal of force.
To try and alleviate
this problem, we have a seat that maybe used rearward facing up
to a weight of 25 Kgs, it has low sides and is suitable for most
children with a Hip Spica fitted. When used the adaptation, it is
suitable for a child weighing between 9 & 25 Kgs. (9 months
- 6 years approximately)
